I Love a Good Cemetery
I love a good cemetery. Beth and I, when we were first married and had no money, used to sometimes explore cemeteries as an inexpensive date. When we lived in the Philippines we lived near a large cemetery which we walked through hundreds of times at least. And today our house in Goodrich is a block from the Goodrich cemetery allowing me to walk the dog through it nearly every day. I guess we have been fortunate to always live near cemeteries!
Why do I like cemeteries so much? I really enjoy looking at the headstones and imaging what life was like for those that came before us. It also reminds me of my own mortality and helps me remember that life is relatively short so that it is good to consider what is really important in the time that I still have left.
As a Christian, I have the hope of the resurrection - I will personally walk the earth for eternity in the new heavens and the new earth, which will be joined together, in a new body that cannot die, get sick, get older, sin or even be tempted by sin. It will be a world win which righteousness dwells.
Thinking about my own mortality isn’t nearly so scary or odd when done with the right perspective.
